Carnifex Mardi Gras 5

  1. CARNIFEX MARDI GRAS 5 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "CARNIFEX MARDI GRAS," by John F. Carr, published by Pequod Press in 1982.

When it comes to designing space ships or other kinds of futuristic machinery, most science fiction illustrators seem to borrow heavily from their predecessors. In the early days of science fiction magazines, most spaceships seemed to be big balls with portholes, or big cigars with fins. But when Chesley Bonestell came along in the 1950s with his sectional tank-ball-strut designed spaceships, similar designs began to show up all over the place in the artwork of other SF artists. And when John Berkey came along in the 1990s with his "Fish" body spaceships divided into intricate structures, other artists began using similar designs for their spaceships.

It is the natural order of progress, each generation stands on the shoulders of previous ones. And from each new generation some men arise to contribute new ideas, new ways of doing things. But after awhile, when generation after generation of SF artists have manipulated geometric shapes in their own unique way, it becomes more and more difficult for an illustrator today, to come up with a shape for a spaceship that has not already been done. And yet, periodically, it happens.

The same goes with drawing any kind of futuristic machinery. In this drawing I tried to come up with designs that would not look familiar to the reader.
